The Book of Laughter and Forgetting is a novel in the form of variations. Its different parts follow one another like the different stages of a journey that leads inside a theme, inside a thought, inside one single situation whose full understanding is lost in immensity.

It is a novel about Tamina and, the moment Tamina leaves the stage, it is a novel for Tamina. She is the main character and the main listener, and all the other stories are a variation on her own first story and come together in her life as in a mirror.
