Le Rêve d'un homme ridicule

“I am a ridiculous man. Now they say I am mad. That would be a promotion, if they did not still find me just as ridiculous. But now I am no longer angry, now I love them all, and even when they mock me…”

Weary of the world, turned away from suicide by a chance encounter, the hero of this imprecatory monologue falls into a deep sleep. His dream then leads him towards a utopian universe, a double of the earth but without original sin, a world where men live good, free and happy.

And this gives Dostoevsky the chance to give free rein to his mystical vein, investing his hero, back in the everyday world of men after having come close to the idea of happiness, with an evangelical mission.
